Alleyways has long been
regarded as one of the most significant contributions to local history in
the area and the Society has decided to reproduce
it after being out of print for several years.
Charles’s fascination with the Mortlake alleyways and his
painstaking research culminated in publication of Alleyways in 1983.
This is now regarded as a seminal work, which is essential reading for
anyone with a serious interest in the history of the area. It is doubtful
whether the development of a village has ever been examined in such detail
from so unusual an angle. Charles
had walked the streets of Mortlake and the uplands of Richmond Park, and
his narrative leaves no doubt of his considerable powers of observation
in linking the present terrain with the footpaths and fields of long ago.
